New energy labels for household appliances in the EU
New rules for energy labels that have come into force in March 2021 affect products such as household appliances for which an energy efficiency class must be declared. The introduction of the new labels has been taking place gradually since then. Read below to find out which products are affected by the changes and how you should proceed in your online shop.
In order to abolish the plus energy classes A+, A++ and A+++, which were sometimes confusing for consumers, the new classes A-G have been introduced this year. This makes it much more transparent for consumers what energy consumption appliances have.
How do the newly scaled energy labels differ?
The new scaling differs from the old scaling as follows:
Scaling old | Scaling new |
A+++ | A |
A++ | B |
A+ | C |
A | D |
B | E |
C | F |
D | G |
In addition to the new scaling, the measurement method has also been adjusted. As a result, the new classes cannot be converted directly. Furthermore, the symbols and content on the labels have also been updated. For refrigerators, for example, the volume is now indicated on a four-class scale (A to D). Consumers can access further information about the model by scanning a QR code on the label.
Which products are affected by the new energy label?
In the first step, the new energy label applies to the following product categories:
- Refrigerators and freezers
- Dishwashers
- Washing machines and washer-dryers
- TVs and other external displays
- Light bulbs and lamps (with fixed light sources)
Other product categories are expected to follow in 2024.
