New cookie banner in ePages Now: what merchants need to know

by Kristof Maletzke, 27.01.20

The European Court of Justice has recently announced that website operators must actively seek the consent of their visitors for the use of technically non-essential cookies. Starting in early February, an update will be introduced for ePages partners, which will bring changes for all ePages Now shops. Merchants who have entered their own cookie notice text in their shop and wish to maintain it need to take action now.

What is the current solution for ePages Now shops?

Up to now, as a shop owner, you have been able to display a simple cookie banner to customers on their first visit to your shop. When the visitor clicks the banner away, it is no longer displayed on this device with the browser used.

What changes are made to the cookie banner?

With the upcoming update, the current banner will be replaced by a new one. This offers visitors the opportunity to actively give their consent to the placing of the corresponding cookies.

Visitors can either accept all cookies, or only the required cookies that are necessary for the operation of the shop. The non-essential cookies (including any cookies set by third parties) are only loaded after the user has confirmed that he consents to all cookies.

What other changes are there in the shop?

There will be a new legal page, which will be linked in the cookie banner and in the footer of the shop. On this page, a frame will display the cookie notice text, which will also appear in the popup. Here, visitors of the shop can change their cookie settings and accept either all cookies or only the essential ones.

What do I need to know about the text of the cookie banner?

The new banner contains the following legally compliant new information text, which replaces the previous text:

This online shop uses cookies to improve your shopping experience. Some cookies are required for the basic functionality of the shop (e.g. the shopping cart) while other cookies help us to improve what we offer online and to operate efficiently. You can agree to all cookies by selecting “Accept all” or you can select “Accept required” to confirm only the required ones. You can change your selection at any time on the “Cookie Policy” page. Further information can be found in our <legal notice> and in our <privacy policy>.

The words Cookie Policy, legal notice and privacy policy are automatically linked to the corresponding legal pages of your shop.

If you wish, you can change the new text. This is only possible after the corresponding update has been installed in your shop.

Please follow these steps:

  1. In the administration area in the main menu select Editor.
  1. Select the gear symbol at the bottom right of the page.
  1. Select the cookie symbol.
  1. Under Cookie notice text, you can change the text.
  1. Save the changes.

What if I have changed the cookie banner text in the past?

If you have changed the text of your cookie banner on your own and do not want to lose it, you should copy it as soon as possible and save it for yourself. This is only possible until the update has been installed in your shop.

To display the text, follow these steps:

  1. In the administration area in the main menu select Editor.
  1. Select the gear symbol at the bottom right of the page.
  1. Select the cookie icon.
  1. Under Cookie notice text, the current text is displayed.

How can I disable the cookie banner?

If you wish, you can deactivate the banner. It will then no longer be displayed to visitors to your shop and the cookie notice text will no longer be visible on the legal page about cookies.

To deactivate the banner, follow these steps:

  1. In the administration area in the main menu select Editor.
  1. Select the gear symbol at the bottom right of the page.
  1. Select the cookie icon.
  1. Under Display cookie notice, select whether to display the notice.
  1. Save the changes.

What do I need to know about custom HTML elements?

You can insert your own HTML elements on the pages of your shop. Under certain circumstances, this can lead to cookies being set on the devices of your shop visitors. The entire HTML element including any cookies will only be loaded when the user has agreed to accept all cookies.

When will the update take place?

The new cookie banner including the modified text will be installed in the ePages shops starting at the beginning of February. When exactly this happens in your online shop depends on the provider of your shop.
